Find your style personality and dress like yourself as the saying goes. Yes please! Understanding your style personality has become one of those ‘old fashioned’ things relegated to the back of the wardrobe as much as shiny leather trousers (ok so some relegations I can live with).
Your style personality, my friends, is one you need to dig out, learn more about and connect with. Like right now. It is a big topic I teach my students. I always wait to talk about it until they have been on a shop floor styling their first client. Then and only then do you fully understand how much the ‘rules’ of styling can somewhat take a back seat to the clients personality.
Quiet and reserved? Cheeky and fun? It all feeds into what will be the best buy, the best coordinates, the best accessorising for this person.
Where a certain shape or style might not in theory suit your body type, your personality might pull it off like no mans business! Style after all is a journey, an exploration and goes much deeper and broader than a rule book. But understanding the rules means you have the confidence and raison de etre to break them. As Oprah says, this is usually the aha moment for my students
I like to describe your style personality as your horoscope for your wardrobe. It’s not just about the clothes you wear but your approach to your style. Hate ironing? Maybe you’re more of a natural gal where neutral colours and breathable fabrics are your bag. Perhaps you love make-up and spend just as much time of your make-up as you do on your clothes? Welcome to the romantic style personality. Each one is very different and has it’s own quirks and yes, it can change over time. You can also be a little bit of two or perhaps want to be more of a certain style but know in your heart you are natural for example. That’s ok! Knowing and understanding are the first steps to know why you’re buying outside your ‘zone’. What does that mean? Well rather than buying into trends and styles just because you saw it on someone else, you’re buying into it for your very own reasons!
So, how do you what what you are? We there are 6 main types:
Loves comfy clothes like denim and a tee. Hates frills and flounces to many bright colours. Clothes have to be easy to move in and ideally no ironing necessary! You probably like to shop in places like GAP, Cos, Mango and anywhere you can get a good selection of denim!
The true creative loves shopping! It is more of an art. You will love vintage shops and finding random items to layer up your look. On anyone else the creative look will look messy (we all tried the boho skirt only Sienna Miller could rock in the early 2000’s!) but on a true creative it looks original, quirky and unusual. Think Carrie Bradshaw.
The dramatic personality loves a bold, sophisticated look. Accessories will be noticeable. Make-up will be obvious. Loves a bright lip and having fun with her hairstyle! Loves to go for bold colours and styles rather than anything girlie or too pink! Shops you might like include River Island, Vivienne Westwood and maybe second hand shops.
This is the girl that loves understated, timeless elegance. Quality is a key word when buying and you don’t like to look too obvious or loud. You probably prefer simple, fine jewellery over anything to statement. You probably prefer good quality basics over a trend. Everything in your wardrobe will last the test of time and you care a lot for what you buy. Shops you might enjoy include LK bennett, Zara, Massimo Dutti and Max Mara.
This is what I call the grown up look. It is quite a parisian chic look so simple, elegant, effortless. It is the lady who does not follow the trends but knows what she likes. You probably don’t like to wear too many patterns or prints but love good quality basics dressed up with perhaps a quirky on trend handbag or accessory. Shops and brands you like might include The Kooples, Diane Von Furstenberg, Cos, Zara Massimo Dutti, Karen Millen.
The romantic personality loves girlie things. Her favourite casuals will be a skirt and top, never a tracksuit! The details of an outfit will be really important to you and you love accessorising. Probably a very tactile person so loves fabrics that feel lovely to touch like silk, satin and jersey. Loves a more feminine palette and her wardrobe will be organised to within an inch of it’s life!
Here are a couple of fun quizzes you can take to get a better understanding for yourself but bare in mind each one is very different but will get you going in the right direction and most importantly get you thinking about your own style and getting to the heart of it without being influenced as we all can be by things around us.
