Giving the ‘Chanel’ look a girlie twist this season!

Published on: February 12, 2013

It’s fair to say one of the most inspirational fashion designers and women throughout the fashion ages has been COCO CHANEL. For over 50 years she was considered the ‘Grande Mademoiselle’ of the fashion industry. She challenged both the status quo for fashion and for women’s roles in society. Her fashions not only changed the way women looked on the outside, but they also changed the way women looked at themselves.

In fact if you are dressed comfortably or have a little black dress in your wardrobe, you have experienced the influence of Chanel. Yet, in addition to giving us a new approach to fashion, one of the most memorable influences for me comes from the fact that the ‘Chanel’ look inspires all kinds of girlieness and femininity through our clothes. We feel the need and want to dress appropriately, but with both feminine flair and authority. In fact when you think of Chanel you think of structure, simplicity, elegance and sexiness. All any sensible woman would want from her clothes. This got me thinking about the ‘girlie’ trend, which is taking the high street by storm this season with everything from florals, crisp whites, paisley and classic monochrome set to surround us.

So, the question is how can we embrace the elegance and longevity echoed from Chanel’s mantra with the new season? My advice is to look out for simple colour combinations and use colourful accessories to enhance a look. Spend money on good quality fabrics like silks and cashmere. Invest in a great little white jacket for Spring to really lighten up those winter dresses and a structured high waisted structured skirt to emphasize those curves in a quirky pattern. Some of my favourite picks include this top from the Mary Portas collection, which is new to House of Fraser, Dundrum this season. I also love what  Phase Eight and Fenn Wright and Manson are doing this season with great pieces that mix both the girly and elegant into two great collections!
