We all have a little fear of leather. Can it ever look good off a catwalk? What exactly is a ‘good’ buy for your autumn wardrobe? And how in gods name do you style it? Here is my leather style file just for you
It seems our fascination is there, even if it is somewhat overshadowed by a fear of looking more Bet Lynch than Bat Woman (actually I’m not saying either is good come to think of it!). Seen on the catwalks of Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent, the high street has clung on with EVERY major retailer offering leather in some form or other this season.
TIP ONE
Go for a classic capsule piece. A leather skirt is the must have item. You can wear in the office with a smart silk shirt, opaque tights and heels or funk up for the evening with a tee shirt, tailored jacket, statement necklace and bright heels. Fran and Jane have two gorgeous faux leather pencil skirts. One in black and one in metallic for €119. I saw a gorgeous girly A line leather skirt in Dickins and Jones in House of Fraser with a cut out floral print. It is more expensive at €180 but it is a wow piece with a great look and fabric. (sorry I couldn’t get a picture but its worth a trip in!).

Fran and Jane leather skirt in metallic €119

Fran and Jane leather skirt in Black €119

Awear €45
TIP TWO
Make your leather skirt more girlie by teaming with a chunky knit or jacket with a sequins pr fun print.

Awear €35

Marks and Spencers £59
TIP THREE
A Leather jacket is definitely another great piece for your wardrobe. I love this faux leather jacket for just €29 from Penney’s but you will find lots of options out there. Check out the sleeveless jacket below also from Mint Velvet. A little more pricey but definitely worth it. This can be worn over tops and dresses for a very transitional look through summer and winter.

Penneys €29

Mint Velvet €229
TIP FOUR
Look for leather trims on skirts, tops and coats or accessories for a gentler way to try out the leather look. Here are a couple of ideas for you!

Fran and Jane mohair top with leather belt €169

Fran and Jane tweed coat with leather trim €229

Finally, just remember to be open-minded when it comes to leather. There will be lots in the shops that is very trend driven but when you spot the right piece, it should offer you versatility, sexiness and fun that will last long after the season is over.
